What is a biodata?
A biodata, short for biographical data, is a one- or two-page profile of a person: who they are, their education and work, and their family. In India the word almost always means a marriage biodata, the profile families share before a first meeting.

Biodata meaning and full form
Biodata is short for biographical data. It sets out the facts about a person in a fixed order, usually as Label : Value pairs, so they can be read at a glance.
In Hindi it is called बायोडाटा or परिचय पत्र, in Marathi बायोडाटा and in Gujarati બાયોડેટા. Families use the English word in every language.
What a biodata contains
- Personal details: name, date and place of birth, height, religion and community, and where the person lives.
- Education and career: degrees, profession, employer and, sometimes, income.
- Family details: parents and their occupations, and siblings.
- Horoscope details, for families who match kundlis: rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status.
- A short ‘about me’, partner preferences and contact details.
- A recent photo.
Biodata, resume and CV: the difference
The three are often confused. Here is what each one is for.

How a marriage biodata is used
Families share biodatas on WhatsApp, through relatives, at community events and on matrimony sites before deciding whether to meet. A clear, well-designed biodata on one A4 page makes a good first impression.
