What to write under partner expectations

Families skim this paragraph to answer one question: would we be a good fit? Help them by putting what really matters first.

  • Values before details. Kindness, honesty, respect for family, a sense of humour. These are what most people actually look for, and what a family can recognise in a first conversation.
  • Your real deal-breakers, stated plainly. If you will only live in one city, want a partner who keeps working, or plan to live with your parents, say so. It is kinder than saying it after two meetings.
  • What you offer in return. “I will support her career” or “we will welcome him as our son” turns a list of wants into an invitation.
  • Three to five sentences. About 40 to 90 words is plenty. The Expectations box holds up to 600 characters.

Facts go in the fields, values go in the paragraph

The Partner Preferences section has separate fields for the facts, so the paragraph doesn’t have to repeat them. Fill in only the ones that truly matter to you:

  • Age: a range, such as “27 to 31 years”.
  • Height: a minimum or a range, if it matters to you.
  • Education and Profession: “Graduate or above”, “Working professional”.
  • Location: “Pune or willing to relocate”, “Open to living abroad”.
  • Lifestyle: “Vegetarian, non-smoker”.

Every field you leave out is one less reason for a good match to pass you by.

A simple formula

Fill in the blanks, then rewrite them until they sound like you.

  • I am looking for someone who is ____, ____ and ____.
  • It matters to me that they ____.
  • After marriage I hope we will ____.
  • In return, I will ____.

When parents write it

Parents often write this section. Write it as “we”, keep it about character rather than status, and check it with your son or daughter: it is their marriage.

What to leave out

  • Complexion and body type. “Fair”, “slim” and “beautiful” put good people off and say more about the writer than the match.
  • Wealth and status. “From a rich family” or “must own a house” reads as a price. If stability matters, say “financially independent”.
  • Anything that sounds like dowry. Demands for cash, gold, a car or “gifts” are illegal, whatever they are called. Saying “we do not believe in dowry” is a good line to add.
  • A long list of exclusions. If community matters to your family, say it once and plainly. Lists of who not to contact read badly.
  • A list nobody could meet. Read yours back and ask: would I meet my own list?

Questions

What should I write in partner expectations in a biodata?+

Three to five sentences: the values that matter most to you, any real deal-breaker such as location or working after marriage, and what you offer in return. Put facts like age range and education in their own fields.

How long should partner expectations be?+

About 40 to 90 words. On a one-page biodata, one line is often enough.

Is it okay to mention caste or community in expectations?+

If it truly matters to your family, say it once and plainly, for example “same community preferred”. Avoid long lists of who not to contact, and put character and values first.

Should I write that I don’t want dowry?+

Yes, if you mean it. “We do not believe in dowry” is a clear, respected line, and it tells families exactly where you stand.

Can I say I want my partner to keep working, or to live separately?+

Yes. Clear practical expectations, said kindly, save both families time. It is better to find out now than after the engagement.

Is what I type sent anywhere?+

No. Your biodata is saved only in your browser on this device, and the PDF is made on your device.
